Family Crankie Workshop with Jana Zeller

Saturday, January 18th - Sunday January 19th; 10am - 2pm each day.

For children and adults age 7 and up.

In this workshop you will build a Crankie! A Crankie is a theater box with a rolling scroll inside that gets turned to the tune of a song or a poem. You will start from scratch and build a box with a turning mechanism for the scroll. Next, each participant will design and create the scroll, based on a limerick or a song, and rendered in at least five images. Children and their caregivers will build this project together. At the conclusion of the weekend we will have an informal presentation of the Crankies, before each participant takes their Crankie home.

Camp Teaching Artist Bios

Jana Zeller's career as a working artist spans over 25 years. In her workshops, classes, residencies and camps she has inspired hundreds of children and adults nationally and internationally to paint, draw, design, imagine and invent, and to build and perform puppets. She is grateful that her mentors at the River Gallery School, at Sarah Lawrence College, and most of all at Sandglass Theater, helped her to unfold a life-long passion for engaging her surrounding communities through the practice of art.
