The SANDGLASS SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM will be August 7 – 19, 2017
Application Deadline is June 15, 2017

The Intensive

Sandglass Theater is offering a two-week intensive workshop in Puppet Theater. This program is offered to puppeteers, teachers, actors, directors, designers and writers who want to expand and deepen their skill and understanding in the art of the puppet.

The Method

Sandglass Theater believes that the puppet, as a theatrical medium, unlocks doors to our more secret sides and to integrating parts of ourselves. This includes the worlds of our dreams and memories, as well as all the metaphorical possibilities of theater.

The objective of this training program is to inspire theater artists to understand and to experience the puppet as a theatrical medium. Sandglass believes in integrating this understanding of the puppet within the larger picture of expressive theater. Sandglass teaches a method of manipulation developed in over 30 years of workshops in Europe and America. Key to the training is the link between the approach to manipulation and the content of the performed work.

Classes during the intensive will be scheduled for five and a half days per week. Daily sessions will include body training and breath development with relation to puppet performance, training in manipulation technique and its relation to artistic statement, and training in materials and their metaphorical implications.  Guided improvisations will lead to development of work that stresses ensemble creation as well as touching on directing techniques for puppet theater. Participants will also receive open workshop time for puppet building. The program will include some evening and weekend sessions with Sandglass company members and guests on a variety of subjects. Guided creations may be presented to an informal public audience.

Recently renovated to included a fully accessable lobby, with ramp for wheelchair access, the Sandglass facilities offer ample space to train, build, rehearse, and perform.

Summer is a wonderful time to be in Southern Vermont. Putney is a beautiful, walkable little town that sits on the banks of the Connecticut river. Along with several places to eat affordably, there’s also a fantastic local co-op for groceries, plenty of hiking trails, and local swimming holes.
